ETF ZROZ vs ETF HYG - 3 months chart

Chart and price context

ZROZ (PIMCO 25+ Year Zero Coupon U.S. Treasury Index ETF) tracks ultra-long STRIPS with an effective duration around 25–27 years. That makes it an amplified pure play on long-end yields. On the 1-hour chart we shared, the blue line shows a clear acceleration higher after the early-October low (near ~$52 around October 7), with a vertical spike that breaks the immediate downtrend channel and recent consolidation. That qualifies as a short-term technical breakout/bounce from the recent swing low.

Supporting price action:

  • Low near $51.97 on Oct 7.
  • Rally through the mid-50s, with a strong session around Oct 15 pushing it near $57, then settling in the mid-to-high $56s.
  • This lines up with the 30-year Treasury yield peaking near ~5.67% in early October and pulling back toward the mid-5.40s.

HYG (high-yield corporates) has been far more range-bound and slightly softer in the mid-to-high $76s, which is consistent with its much lower duration (~3 years) and greater sensitivity to credit spreads/carry rather than pure rate moves. The relative strength in ZROZ vs. HYG is real on this timeframe.

Is it a meaningful trend change?

Not yet a confirmed major reversal. ZROZ remains in a longer-term downtrend driven by the rise in long yields this year. It is still below key moving averages (50-day around the high $56s–$57 area, 200-day and 30-week averages substantially higher). Many stage analyses still classify it as Stage 4 decline territory. The recent move is best viewed as an oversold bounce off multi-month yield highs, amplified by extreme duration, rather than a structural breakout of the multi-month downtrend. Sustained closes above the 50-day and then the 200-day, with yields making a clearer peak, would be needed for a more durable trend shift.

Views on the short-term bid in ZROZ

The bid has clear tactical drivers right now:

  • Mean-reversion after the long end hit multi-decade highs (30y near 5.7%).
  • Flight-to-quality flows amid volatility in AI/tech equities and concerns around leveraged AI-related borrowing/capex.
  • Some dialing back of immediate Fed hike odds for the late-October meeting (after the initial CPI reaction), with certain officials signaling less urgency.
  • Softness in oil prices reducing a near-term inflation impulse, plus occasional speculation around Treasury refunding dynamics.

The macro backdrop is not especially supportive for a sustained rally. The Fed hiked 25 bp in September 2026 to a 3.75–4.00% range. Minutes and the September SEP show a majority of participants still expect at least one more hike by year-end because inflation remains elevated (CPI prints around 3.7%, core still above target). The economy is described as expanding at a solid pace with a stable labor market. This is not a cutting cycle or a clear “growth scare” regime—higher-for-longer or modest further tightening remains the base case. In that environment, long-end real rates and term premium can reassert themselves, and ZROZ’s convexity works violently in both directions.

Bottom line as a macro view: Our chart call on the short-term breakout/bounce is fair and actionable as a tactical duration trade. The risk/reward is asymmetric because of the duration, so sizing and stops matter a lot. It is more attractive as a short-term trade if you have a specific catalyst for further yield compression (softer inflation data, clearer growth disappointment, or stronger confirmation of a Fed pause). It is less compelling as a high-conviction strategic long given the still-hawkish lean from the Fed and sticky inflation.

Relative to HYG, the divergence makes sense: this is primarily a rates/haven bid rather than a broad credit-friendly move.

This is a market commentary based on the chart and recent data, not investment advice. Duration products like ZROZ can reverse quickly on any re-acceleration in yields.
