ETF ZROZ vs ETF HYG - 3 months chart - An update from 2 days ago publication
Updated analysis (as of ~Oct 22, 2026 ~16:00 UTC): The short-term breakout in ZROZ has extended and strengthened.
Chart update
On the latest 1-hour chart, ZROZ (blue) has continued higher and is trading near 58.45, having pushed well above the prior bounce levels. From the early-October low near $52 (Oct 7), this is now roughly a 12%+ rally. The move has cleared the recent consolidation and is challenging/approaching the 50-day moving average zone (previously around the high $56s–$57 area). HYG (orange) remains relatively range-bound near 77.02, showing little of the same upside impulse.
This is a clearer short-term technical breakout/continuation than the Oct 20 snapshot. The vertical acceleration off the lows and the follow-through are consistent with an amplified duration-driven response to falling long-end yields.
Yield and price context
- 30-year Treasury yields have continued to ease (recent readings in the mid-to-low 5.30s, down from the early-October peak near 5.67%).
- ZROZ’s extreme effective duration (~25–27 years) turns even modest yield declines into outsized price gains, which matches the ongoing bid.
- HYG’s lower duration (~3 years) and credit exposure explain why it is not participating in the same way; it is driven more by spreads and carry than pure rate moves.
Macro updateThe Fed backdrop has not materially changed in a dovish direction:
- Consensus (and recent commentary from officials such as Daly, Waller, Collins, etc.) points to a skip at the Oct 27–28 meeting, with a high probability of another 25 bp hike in December.
- Inflation remains elevated and sticky; the economy is still described as solid/resilient.
- This is still a “higher for longer / one more hike” regime rather than an easing cycle.
The ZROZ bid therefore continues to look primarily tactical: a combination of yield mean-reversion after multi-decade highs, some flight-to-quality amid equity/AI volatility, softer near-term oil dynamics, and reduced odds of an immediate October hike. It is not yet driven by a clear shift in the Fed’s reaction function or a growth scare severe enough to force policy easing.
Revised view on the short-term ZROZ bid
- Technically: The breakout has more credibility than two days ago. Follow-through above the 50-day area would further improve the short-term structure. A sustained push toward the 200-day / prior resistance zones (upper $60s+) would be needed to talk about a larger trend change.
- Tactically: The duration-driven momentum is real and the risk/reward has improved for those already long from lower levels. However, the position remains high-volatility. Any re-acceleration in yields (hotter data, hawkish Fed rhetoric, or supply concerns) can reverse a meaningful portion of the recent gains quickly.
- Macro caution: The fundamental setup is still not especially friendly for a durable multi-month rally in ultra-long zeros. Until inflation data cools more convincingly or growth risks rise enough to alter the Fed path, this looks more like a strong tactical bounce than a regime shift.
Bottom line: Our original call on the breakout was correct, and the subsequent price action has validated the short-term upside. Treat the current move as an extended duration trade with improved technicals but still elevated reversal risk given the Fed’s remaining hiking bias. Size and risk management remain critical.
