Could Proxima Centauri be driving the 7-year stock market cycle?

In 2016, astronomers discovered a clear ~7-year stellar cycle in Proxima Centauri — the closest star to our Sun (4.24 light-years away).

Key point: its stellar spots are much denser and far stronger than sunspots on our Sun.

Activity lows: 2002 → 2009 → 2016 (next: 2023, 2030,...)
Activity highs: 2006 → 2013 (next: 2020, 2027,...)

These line up strikingly with several major stock-market cycle troughs.

The data sample is still limited, and any physical mechanism at that distance is hard to imagine... yet the timing is hard to ignore.

Coincidence?

16-Week Cycle in Markets

The ~16-week cycle (≈112 calendar days / ~80 trading days) shows up clearly in many instruments, including SPX.

What’s driving it?

Many cycle analysts look to the solar system for stable periodicities.

Mercury’s synodic period is 115.9 days — strikingly close.

Is there a real link?

And if so, what’s the mechanism — direct, or indirect via subtle modulation of solar plasma/activity?

More questions than answers at this point.

Financial Markets vs Planetary-Solar Cycles

  • Some cycle analysts look at the solar planetary system cycles as sources of cycles in nature and financial markets.
  • The most notable is the about 11-year sunspot cycle. Solar activity is strongly correlated with financial markets.
  • Sunspot peaks often coincide with peaks in various financial markets, such as stocks, gold, and crypto.
  • Stock market lows typically precede or occur simultaneously with sunspot lows. Based on the projected evolution of the solar cycle, the next major stock market low is expected around 2030. Interestingly, this aligns with my analysis of longer-term stock market cycles.

SPX Today vs the 2000 Dot-Com Top

Pattern self-similarity is common in markets.

I ran a best-fit overlay of the 1998–2000 run-up against the current advance (Jul 2024 → today).

Maximum shape correlation: r = 0.95

The math currently places us roughly 2 months before the equivalent of the March 2000 peak.

This is not a forecast — just a clean quantitative comparison of the two patterns.
